Background
This gene encodes a carcinoma-associated antigen, part of a family with at least two type I membrane proteins. It is expressed on most normal epithelial cells and gastrointestinal carcinomas, functioning as a homotypic calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule. It is targeted in immunotherapy for human carcinomas. Mutations can lead to congenital tufting enteropathy.
