The Impella 2.5 is a percutaneous, catheter-based heart pump designed to provide partial circulatory support. It operates by drawing blood from the left ventricle and expelling it into the ascending aorta. The device is inserted via the femoral artery and can support cardiac procedures for up to 6 hours without requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. It features a 12 French motor running at 50,000 RPM, capable of pumping 2.5 liters of blood per minute.
The Impella CP™ is an advanced version of the Impella 2.5, offering increased blood flow while using the same insertion procedure. It received FDA clearance in September 2012 for similar applications as the Impella 2.5.
The Impella 5.0 is a microaxial blood pump that delivers up to 5.0 liters per minute from the left ventricle to the aorta. It can be inserted via femoral cut down or through the axillary artery. The device is minimally invasive, requiring no septal puncture or external blood priming, and was FDA cleared in April 2009 for use up to 6 hours.
