Intervertebral Disc Structure
The intervertebral disc is a flexible connection between vertebrae, consisting of an outer fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus) and an inner soft portion (nucleus pulposus). The nucleus acts as a shock absorber and facilitates spinal movement.
Spinal Disc Herniation
Spinal disc herniation occurs when the nucleus pulposus protrudes beyond the annulus fibrosus, causing nerve root compression. It is most common in the lumbar and cervical regions.
Treatment Procedures
  • Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression (PLDD): A minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia. A needle is inserted into the nucleus pulposus, guided by imaging techniques. Laser energy is used to reduce disc volume and nerve pressure.
  • Open Back Surgery: Involves muscle fiber destruction and annulus fibrosus perforation, leading to potential complications and longer recovery times.
Advantages of PLDD
PLDD offers a shorter rehabilitation period and lower costs compared to open back surgery, with minimal disturbance to muscle fibers and no damage to blood vessels, spinal nerves, or the spinal cord.

Vertebrae Intervertebral disc structure Spinal disc herniation An intervertebral disc (Latin: Discus intervertebralis) is a flexible connection between vertebrae. It absorbs the pressure and allows the movement of the vertebrae and consists of an outer fibrous ring called annulus fibrosus and an inner soft portion which called nucleus pulposus. The annulus fibrosus is made of a multiple strong layers of fibrocartilage. The nucleus pulposus...

Open back surgery Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression - PLDD Percutaneous laser disc decompression is a minimally invasive therapy to treat spinal disc herniation which performed under local anesthesia. During an open back surgery, in addition to destruction of the back muscle fibers, the surgeon creates holes in the annulus fibrosus to remove the nucleus pulposus. It will lead to detritus of scar tissue. All of these severe disturbances will result in necessity of spinal fusion which in turn leads to adjacent disc syndrome. All of these will cost so much time and expenses. A puncture needle...
