It may possibly trigger systemic failures such as incontinence or numbness. In worst cases paralysis of the extremities are the result. Bei einem Bandscheibenvorfall drückt die Bandscheibe auf die Nervenwurzel. Dies führt zu Schmerzen und kann ggf. zu systemischen Ausfällen wie Inkontinenz oder Taubheit bis hin zur Lähmung der Extremitäten führen. Mit Hilfe eines bildgebenden Verfahrens wird eine Punktionsnadel in die Bandscheibe geschoben. Wenn die Nadel positioniert ist, wird ein Lichtleiter in die Nadel geführt. Die Laserstrahlung, die über den Lichtleiter appliziert wird, verdampft Flüssigkeit und härtet die Kollagenfasern. Durch das Verdampfen wird in der Bandscheibe eine Volumenreduktion erzeugt.
