
Study Design: This document presents a retrospective analysis of 36 cases involving degenerative disc disease treated with interbody fusion using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cages.
Objective: The primary aim is to assess the safety and efficiency of PEEK cages in anterior cervical fusion (ACF).
Background: Anterior cervical fusion with autologous bone has been practiced for over 50 years. The introduction of cages with materials that promote osteogenesis has simplified interbody fusion techniques. The main goals of using bone substitutes in ACF are to provide immediate biomechanical support, ensure osteo-integration of the graft, and avoid local side effects at the donor site.
Materials and Methods: Over an 18-month period, 36 patients underwent cervical fusions at 43 levels between C3 and C7, targeting one or two disc spaces for degenerative disc disease. PEEK cages were used, filled with either granulated coralline hydroxylapatite or deantigenated pig bone in a gel solution.
Results: Approximately 97% of patients experienced good to excellent outcomes, with one myelopathic patient having a fair result. The cervical fusion rates were 16.7% at 3 months, 61.1% at 6 months, and 100% at one year.
Conclusions: PEEK cages are deemed safe and effective for ACF. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are recommended to confirm these preliminary findings.

We implanted all disc spaces with PEEK cages (Stryker Corporation, Kalamazoo, MI) containing granulated coralline hydroxylapatite (Pro-Osteon 200, Interpore Cross International, Irvine, CA) or deantigenated pig bone in a gel solution (Gen-Os, Tecnoss, Torino, Italy). RESULTS: About 97% of patients had a good to excellent outcome; the result in one myelopathic patient was fair. The cervical fusion rate was 16.7% at 3 months, 61.1% at 6 months, and 100% at one year. CONCLUSIONS: PEEK cages appear to be safe and efficient for ACF.
