Introduction
ALZET Osmotic Pumps and Brain Infusion Kits have been pivotal in neuroscience research for nearly four decades. They facilitate direct administration of agents to the central nervous system (CNS), bypassing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which has led to significant advancements in understanding neuropathic pain, cerebral ischemia, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Benefits of ALZET Pumps
  • Small size suitable for mice and young rats.
  • Direct delivery across the BBB.
  • Continuous, controlled delivery of neuroactive compounds.
  • Ideal for behavioral studies without animal handling during infusion.
  • Easy catheter attachment for delivery to the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves.
  • Proven method with over 15,000 publications.
  • Improved bioavailability for short half-life peptides and proteins.
  • Cost-effective for chronic dosing of lab animals.
  • Automatic dosing during nighttime and weekends.
ALZET Brain Infusion Kits
These kits allow for infusion into cerebral ventricles or direct microinfusion into discrete brain structures. Each kit includes materials for 10 brain infusions, such as cannulae, catheter tubes, and depth-adjustment spacers.
Specifications of Brain Infusion Kits
  • BIK1 & BIK2: Stainless steel tubes, 28-30 gauge, penetration depths of 1-5 mm.
  • BIK3: Suitable for mice, with a narrow diameter and suture grooves for minimal brain trauma.
Catheter Tubing and Intrathecal Catheters
Available in vinyl and polyethylene, these catheters are designed for targeted delivery applications. Intrathecal catheters are optimized for occipital or lumbar insertion in rats and mice.
ALZET Osmotic Pumps: Rates & Durations
Pumps are available in various sizes and durations, ranging from 1 day to 42 days, with release rates from 0.11 μl/hr to 10 μl/hr, catering to diverse experimental needs.
Wound Closure Systems
The AutoClip & Reflex systems offer a quick alternative to sutures for closing incisions during pump implantations. Loctite 454 adhesive is recommended for brain cannulation.

Neuroscience Products Fact Sheet-2

ALZET pumps and brain infusion kits are a reliable and convenient tool to deliver agents across the BBB, and directly to their site of action in the brain. They enable continuous delivery of a precise drug dose, and ensure that sufficient levels are maintained at the target location to elicit their effects. ALZET brain infusion kits can be used in two ways: • Infusion into the cerebral ventricles, exposing a wide variety of brain regions to the infusate via the cerebrospinal fluid. • Direct microinfusion of discrete brain structures, resulting in localized distribution of infusate in the target...
