Overview
Hyalofast® is a one-step cartilage repair product designed to support the regeneration of hyaline-like cartilage. It is composed of a 3D non-woven scaffold made from Hyaff, a 100% benzyl ester of hyaluronic acid (HA). Structural and Biological Roles
The Hyaff 3D scaffold plays a dual role in tissue regeneration. Structurally, it supports MSC adhesion and 3D organization, aiding in the recovery of original tissue anatomy. Biologically, as the Hyaff fibers degrade, they release hyaluronic acid, creating an environment conducive to tissue regeneration.
Clinical Effectiveness
Hyalofast has shown effective regeneration in clinically challenging patient populations, providing durable clinical results. It is particularly effective for large patellofemoral lesions, OCD lesions, and in patients over 45 years of age, with results stable up to 10 years. Clinical and MRI results are comparable to matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI), considered the gold standard for large cartilage lesions.
Application and Adaptability
Hyalofast is applied in a single-step procedure, either through mini-arthrotomy or arthroscopy. It features a uniform 3D structure that can be applied on either side, folded, and stacked if necessary. It adheres well, often eliminating the need for fixation, and requires minimal additional instrumentation. The product is adaptable to various lesion shapes and sizes and can be used for both chondral and osteochondral defects of the ankle and knee.
Indications
Hyalofast is CE-marked for the repair of chondral and osteochondral lesions, acting as a scaffold for MSCs or as chondroprotective coverage after bone marrow stimulation procedures. It is indicated for ICRS Grade 3 and 4 lesions caused by acute trauma, repeated microtrauma, instability, malalignment, or osteochondritis dissecans (OCD).
Product Information
Hyalofast is available in different sizes (2x2 and 5x5) and is not approved for use in the United States. The product is manufactured by Anika Therapeutics S.r.l. in Italy.
