The Arthrex 5.5mm Jones Fixation Screw - LS0461 - 1

The Arthrex 5.5 mm Jones Fixation Screw Traditionally, the fifth metatarsal metadiaphyseal fracture has been treated with both nonoperative and operative methods. In recent years, operative treatment has definitely gained favor. However, the surgeon’s choice of screws has been limited. Prior to this release, the limitation of screw choices could create undesirable and unavoidable problems including difficult insertion, late postoperative refracture, distal diaphyseal “blow-out”, and screw head prominence. The Arthrex Jones Fixation Screw is specifically designed for intramedullary compression/fixation of the fifth metatarsal. The unique screw design fills the void that currently exists with other products used for this indication. • Smooth “bullet” tip design aids in ease of entry through the soft tissues, as well as the drill hole entry point. • Large solid shank diameter provides increased bending strength, reducing the incidence of refracture. • Thread length is shorter so that the shank (shaft)/thread junction will end up well distal to the fracture site, again reducing refracture incidence. • Thread diameter is smaller to avoid distal shaft notching and blow-out, and giving maximum purchase in the snug fifth metatarsal intramedullary canal. • Screw head is smaller to avoid prominence of the screw head, yet provides excellent compression.

Proper positioning of the 3 starting point on the fifth metatarsal base is essential. A starting point at the tip of the fifth metatarsal base is incorrect and directs the drill medial and dorsal.
