The Arthrex 5.5mm Jones Fixation Screw - LS0461

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The Arthrex 5.5 mm Jones Fixation Screw is designed for the intramedullary compression/fixation of the fifth metatarsal, addressing limitations of previous screw options that led to complications such as difficult insertion and postoperative refracture.

Design Features
  • Smooth Bullet Tip: Facilitates easy entry through soft tissues and drill hole.
  • Large Solid Shank Diameter: Increases bending strength, reducing refracture risk.
  • Shorter Thread Length: Ensures the shank/thread junction is distal to the fracture site.
  • Smaller Thread Diameter: Prevents distal shaft notching and blow-out, maximizing purchase in the canal.
  • Smaller Screw Head: Minimizes prominence while providing excellent compression.

Surgical Procedure
  • Positioning: The foot is placed off the OR table for easy C-arm manipulation.
  • Incision: A percutaneous 8-10 mm incision is made approximately 1 cm proximal to the fifth metatarsal base.
  • Starting Point: Proper positioning is crucial; incorrect starting points can misdirect the drill.
  • Guide Wire Placement: Checked under fluoroscopy to ensure correct alignment.
  • Drilling Options: Drill past the fracture site using either a drill bit or a cannulated drill with a guide wire.

Product Availability
The 5.5 mm Jones Screw is available separately or as part of a screw instrument set.

Conclusion
The Arthrex Jones Fixation Screw offers a comprehensive solution for fifth metatarsal fractures, enhancing surgical outcomes through its innovative design.

The Arthrex 5.5mm Jones Fixation Screw - LS0461-1

The Arthrex 5.5 mm Jones Fixation Screw Traditionally, the fifth metatarsal metadiaphyseal fracture has been treated with both nonoperative and operative methods. In recent years, operative treatment has definitely gained favor. However, the surgeon’s choice of screws has been limited. Prior to this release, the limitation of screw choices could create undesirable and unavoidable problems including difficult insertion, late postoperative refracture, distal diaphyseal “blow-out”, and screw head prominence. The Arthrex Jones Fixation Screw is specifically designed for intramedullary compression/fixation of the fifth metatarsal. The unique screw design fills the void that currently exists with other products used for this indication. • Smooth “bullet” tip design aids in ease of entry through the soft tissues, as well as the drill hole entry point. • Large solid shank diameter provides increased bending strength, reducing the incidence of refracture. • Thread length is shorter so that the shank (shaft)/thread junction will end up well distal to the fracture site, again reducing refracture incidence. • Thread diameter is smaller to avoid distal shaft notching and blow-out, and giving maximum purchase in the snug fifth metatarsal intramedullary canal. • Screw head is smaller to avoid prominence of the screw head, yet provides excellent compression.

The Arthrex 5.5mm Jones Fixation Screw - LS0461-2

5.5 mm Jones Fixation Screw Surgical Technique The foot is placed off the end of the OR table so the C-arm can be easily maneuvered/manipulated around the foot for intraoperative fluoroscopy. Pointed drill bit placement The 8-10 mm longitudinal 2 incision is percutaneous and is marked approximately 1 cm proximal to the base of the fifth metatarsal. Proper positioning of the 3 starting point on the fifth metatarsal base is essential. A starting point at the tip of the fifth metatarsal base is incorrect and directs the drill medial and dorsal. Guide wire placement The guide wire or pointed drill...
