Clinical Utility P carinii is a widespread organism infecting man and other mammals. In immunocompromised patients, especially those with AIDS, it causes pulmonary infection and pneumonia. Although cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) have decreased since the introduction of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART), PCP is still the most common opportunistic infection in patients with HIV infection.
