Glycated haemoglobin, or HbAlc, is formed by the reaction of glucose with normal haemoglobin (Hb). The amount of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in red blood cells therefore increases with the average blood glucose concentration. Because the lifespan of a red blood cell is typically 100-120 days, HbA1c levels provide an accurate estimate of control of glucose levels over the previous 2-3 months.
