Renal - 1

A Pioneer and Leader in Kidney Disease Treatment Baxter is a leader in home-based therapies, such as peritoneal dialysis (PD), and offers other products and services for people with end-stage kidney disease. Baxter also manufactures products and provides support services for Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), an acute, hospital-based therapy, and distributes products for in-center hemodialysis (HD). The majority of Baxter’s Renal sales come from more than 40 countries outside the United States, making this one of the most global of Baxter’s businesses. Baxter has been a dialysis pioneer for more than 50 years, beginning with the introduction of the first commercially built artificial kidney. More than 30 years ago, Baxter led the development of PD to provide patients with home-based treatment options and an alternative to in-center HD treatment. Today, Baxteris developing home therapy options aimed at providing enhanced clinical outcomes and quality of life, such as a new automated PD cycler and home HD technology platform. SUMMARY OF KIDNEY DISEASE AND DIALYSIS TREATMENT OPTIONS The kidneys remove waste, toxins and excess fluid from the blood. They also regulate body water and release important hormones in your blood to control blood pressure, make red blood cells and promote strong bones. When kidneys fail, the toxins and excess fluids that accumulate systemically in the blood cause the patient to become critically ill, commonly leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Chronic kidney disease can lead to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), or kidney failure, which is a chronic, irreversible condition that will ultimately lead to death without one of two interventions: dialysis or transplant. Because transplantation is a limited option due to a shortage of donor organs, dialysis is by far the most common treatment. There are several different dialysis treatment options designed to meet patients’ unique needs. Age, health and timing should be considered when choosing the right form of dialysis. Peritoneal Dialysis Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a self-administered therapy that can be managed by patients at home and can offer a number of potential benefits. In PD, dialysis solution is administered into the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity through a catheter in the patient’s abdomen. The peritoneal cavity is surrounded by a thin membrane (called the peritoneum), which works with the dialysate solution to serve as a filter through which waste and excess water are drawn into the solution. The used solution is then drained from the abdomen and discarded. There are two types of PD treatment: continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), in which patients manually infuse their PD solution and perform solution exchanges several times a day; and automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), in which solution is infused and drained automatically by a device while the patient sleeps.

Renal - 2

A Pioneer and Leader in Kidney Disease Treatment PD offers several treatment benefits for patients initiating renal replacement therapy. For example, residual (or remaining) kidney function may be better preserved in patients treated with PD as compared with those treated with in-center hemodialysis.1,2,3,4,5 A study published in February 2012 in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that patients treated with peritoneal dialysis before transplantation had better survival rates than those treated in clinics via hemodialysis.6 Hemodialysis In HD, blood is withdrawn...

A Pioneer and Leader in Kidney Disease Treatment This can lead to a systemic accumulation of metabolic waste and fluid requiring immediate attention in an acute care setting. CRRT is typically performed 24 hours a day in the intensive care unit until kidney function returns, or in the case of permanent injury, until the patient is transferred to chronic HD or PD. PRODUCT AND SERVICE PORTFOLIO Education and Support Services Baxter provides education for patients and clinicians, as well as support services to enhance the application and delivery of its portfolio of dialysis treatment...

A Pioneer and Leader in Kidney Disease Treatment For APD, Baxter provides the HOMECHOICE and HOMECHOICE PRO cyclers, which automatically perform solution exchanges overnight while the patient sleeps. Their compact size and ease of use are conducive to home treatment, and make them convenient for patients to take with them when they travel. In 2011, Baxter received FDA clearance for its new HomeChoice SmartCare software, which includes a number of improvements while maintaining simplicity of use for patients using Baxter’s HomeChoice APD machine.
