They operate using the principle of a segmented gamma scanner (SGS) to evaluate the distribution of radionuclide activity in drums across up to nine vertical segments. The WAM monitors can be customised to meet customers' variable requirements for measuring different types and sizes of waste drums, as well as for various waste activities and drum handling requirements. All WAM-200 series monitors include: • Gamma spectrometric detector. There are two basic monitor configurations available depending on the detector used: • WAM-200 monitor features an HPGe detector with 30% efficiency and liquid nitrogen cooling • WAM-210 monitor features a CeBr3 scintillation detector • Rotating platform for measured waste drums with an integrated weighing scale • Fixed collimator of the detector • Vertical lifting mechanism, which ensures measurement of the waste drum over its entire height • A data processing system that provides comprehensive waste drum analysis The following options and features can also be added to • HPGe detector with different efficiencies corresponding to the activity of the waste in the drum • Alternative detector cooling: electric or hybrid (combination of liquid nitrogen and electric cooling) • One to four collimated dose rate detectors for the Fast-Scan function • Collimator with an adjustable aperture for measuring a wide range of activities in waste drums with automatic aperture setting using the Fast-Scan function • Add-on for collimator designed to measure very high activity levels • Manual or automatic waste drum handling system • Swab wipe system for measuring surface contamination on waste drums • Barcode, QR or RFID reader for waste drum identification • Area gamma detectors

When the waste drum is loaded onto the rotating platform, it is weighed. The operator is then asked to enter the measurement input information and then the measurement can be started. When integrated, the Fast-Scan function performs a quick measurement using dose rate detectors to determine the maximum dose rate at the surface of the waste drum. The aperture of the collimator is then automatically adjusted to achieve optimal detection efficiency.
