Purpose

The WAM-200 series monitors are designed for the quantitative and qualitative characterization of radioactive waste in drums, with activity levels ranging from 3 kBq to 1 TBq for Cs-137. They utilize a segmented gamma scanner (SGS) to assess radionuclide activity distribution across up to nine vertical segments of the drum. The monitors can be tailored to accommodate various drum sizes, waste activities, and handling requirements.

Specifications
  • Gamma spectrometric detector options: HPGe detector with 30% efficiency and liquid nitrogen cooling (WAM-200) or CeBr3 scintillation detector (WAM-210).
  • Rotating platform with integrated weighing scale for waste drums.
  • Fixed collimator and vertical lifting mechanism for comprehensive drum measurement.
  • Data processing system for detailed waste drum analysis.
Optional Features
  • HPGe detector with varying efficiencies.
  • Alternative cooling options: electric or hybrid.
  • Fast-Scan function with collimated dose rate detectors.
  • Adjustable aperture collimator for a wide range of activities.
  • Manual or automatic drum handling systems.
  • Swab wipe system for surface contamination measurement.
  • Barcode, QR, or RFID reader for drum identification.
  • Area gamma detectors and calibration fixtures.
Operation

Upon loading the waste drum onto the rotating platform, it is weighed, and the operator inputs measurement data. The Fast-Scan function, if integrated, quickly measures the maximum dose rate, adjusting the collimator aperture for optimal efficiency. The drum is measured in segments, with the detector moving vertically and the drum rotating. A report is generated detailing radionuclide activity in each segment and the entire drum.

Software Features
  • Initiating new measurements.
  • Manual control and calibration.
  • Archiving of measurements, calibrations, and error messages.
  • Printing of measurement and calibration reports.
Technical Specifications
  • Detector efficiencies: HPGe (30%), CeBr3 equivalent to HPGe (30%).
  • Measuring range for Cs-137: 3 kBq to 1 TBq.
  • Resolution for 122 keV: HPGe (<0.85 keV), CeBr3 (<10 keV).
  • Resolution for 1330 keV: HPGe (<1.85 keV), CeBr3 (<40 keV).
  • Energy range: HPGe (40 keV to 3 MeV), CeBr3 (350 keV to 3 MeV).
  • Dimensions: 2560 × 2145 × 1670 mm; Weight: 1700 kg.

WAM-200-1

• Monitor configuration to customer requirements • Division of the measured waste drum into volume segments • Analysis of spectrometric data from each volume segment • Peak attenuation correction • Integrated waste drum weighing • Optional Fast-Scan function • Detector with optional adjustable collimator • Integrated control software The WAM-200 series of monitors is intended for the quantitative and qualitative characterization of radioactive waste deposited in drums with overall activity from 3 kBq to 1 TBq (for Cs-137). They operate using the principle of a segmented gamma scanner (SGS) to evaluate the distribution of radionuclide activity in drums across up to nine vertical segments. The WAM monitors can be customised to meet customers' variable requirements for measuring different types and sizes of waste drums, as well as for various waste activities and drum handling requirements. All WAM-200 series monitors include: • Gamma spectrometric detector. There are two basic monitor configurations available depending on the detector used: • WAM-200 monitor features an HPGe detector with 30% efficiency and liquid nitrogen cooling • WAM-210 monitor features a CeBr3 scintillation detector • Rotating platform for measured waste drums with an integrated weighing scale • Fixed collimator of the detector • Vertical lifting mechanism, which ensures measurement of the waste drum over its entire height • A data processing system that provides comprehensive waste drum analysis The following options and features can also be added to • HPGe detector with different efficiencies corresponding to the activity of the waste in the drum • Alternative detector cooling: electric or hybrid (combination of liquid nitrogen and electric cooling) • One to four collimated dose rate detectors for the Fast-Scan function • Collimator with an adjustable aperture for measuring a wide range of activities in waste drums with automatic aperture setting using the Fast-Scan function • Add-on for collimator designed to measure very high activity levels • Manual or automatic waste drum handling system • Swab wipe system for measuring surface contamination on waste drums • Barcode, QR or RFID reader for waste drum identification • Area gamma detectors

WAM-200-2

When the waste drum is loaded onto the rotating platform, it is weighed. The operator is then asked to enter the measurement input information and then the measurement can be started. When integrated, the Fast-Scan function performs a quick measurement using dose rate detectors to determine the maximum dose rate at the surface of the waste drum. The aperture of the collimator is then automatically adjusted to achieve optimal detection efficiency. The waste drum is then gradually measured by a detector in individual cylindrical segments over its entire height. During the measurement, the drum...
