The device is user-friendly, requires minimal maintenance, and includes features such as a backlit display, auto zero bridge adjustment, and storage for 20,000 samples.
Unpacking and Setup
Upon receipt, ensure all components are present and undamaged. Retain packaging for future use. The device is ready for use but requires sensor regeneration before initial operation. It can operate on internal battery power or an external AC power supply.
Technical Specifications
The J405 features updated electronics with 24-bit a/d conversion and can operate for 24 hours on its internal battery. It offers multiple measurement units and includes diagnostic and error detection capabilities. The device measures mercury vapor concentrations with a display range of 0.5 μg/m3 to 999 μg/m3, a resolution of 0.01 μg/m3 Hg, and a response time of 16 seconds in sample mode.
Operation
The J405 features a user-friendly interface with options for sampling, regeneration, data management, and system settings. Daily operations include sensor regeneration and sampling, with specific procedures for different power sources.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance involves preventive checks, filter replacements, and battery management. A detailed schedule and instructions are provided in the manual.
Calibration and Troubleshooting
Calibration services are available from the factory, and functionality verification is recommended. The troubleshooting section addresses potential interferences and error messages.
Accessories and Parts
A range of accessories and maintenance parts are available, including filters and battery packs.
Applications
The J405 is suitable for regulatory compliance, ambient air analysis, quality control, and portable mercury vapor detection.
Warranty
The manual includes warranty information and customer service contact details.
Instrument Operation
The main screen displays system time, battery status, and mercury concentration. The device can operate in manual or auto-sampling modes, with intervals from 1 to 120 minutes. USB ports allow data transfer and menu navigation.
Sample Menu
Users can select between manual and auto-sampling modes, set sample intervals, and choose measurement units. Continuous sampling is not recommended as it may reduce sensor life.
Regen Menu
The sensor saturation meter indicates when regeneration is needed. The regeneration process requires external power and involves a 45-minute cycle.
Warmup Procedure
For accuracy at cleanup levels below 3 µg/m3, the J405 must be warmed up with the Zero Air Filter in the intake at the sampling location.
Set Interval and Hour
The J405 can be set to perform sensor regenerations at intervals of 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours, or when the sensor is saturated.
Data Management
The J405 can store up to 20,000 data points. Data can be retrieved via USB, saved to a USB flash drive, or printed directly.
System Menu
The SYSTEM menu is password-protected. Users can set alarm levels, toggle audible alarms, and choose display modes.
Daily Operations
Before daily use, verify the instrument's operation by checking the display, battery level, and performing a sensor regeneration.
Sensor Regeneration
Sensor regeneration is necessary to clean the sensor of accumulated mercury vapor. It should be performed at the start and end of each day.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
Common issues such as power problems and battery failures are addressed with solutions like recharging or replacing the battery. Display warnings and error messages guide users on corrective actions.
Functional Test Kit Overview
The J405 Functional Test Kit (FTK) is used for verifying the functionality of the instrument. It is important to handle the mercury vial and thermometer with care due to the risk of mercury contamination.

The heart of the J405 is the well-proven gold film sensing technology. A thin gold film, in the presence of mercury vapor, undergoes an increase in electrical resistance proportional to the mass of mercury vapor in the sample. When the SAMPLE button is pressed, an internal pump pulls ambient air through a scrubber filter (AZI P/N: 600-0262) and into the flow system. After three seconds, the sample solenoid bypass opens, closing off the scrubber filter from the flow system. The sample air passes through the AG filter (AZI P/N: 600-0293), an acidic gas filter that removes any acidic gases that...

JEROME® J405-11

The instrument’s microprocessor automatically re-zeroes the digital meter at the start of each sample cycle and holds the meter reading until the next sample cycle is activated, thus eliminating drift between samples. During the sample mode cycle, a sensor saturation meter on the LCD represents the percentage of sensor saturation, or adsorbed mercury collected on the gold film. With use, the sensor becomes saturated and needs to be cleaned. This is accomplished by a manually activated 45-minute sensor regeneration cycle, which removes the mercury from the sensor. The solenoid bypass closes during...
