Bozich (Rev03) 08/20/13 (Rev03) 1 of 1 General Electrode Care • Electrode preparation and application should be supervised by a qualified healthcare professional. Inspect electrodes for wear or damage prior to use. If electrode wire, termination, or surface area is worn, discard the electrode. Cadwell is not responsible for injury, infection, or other damage resulting from improper storage, preparation, use, or disposal of electrodes. 1. Disposable Needle Electrodes The labeling carries the following information: Symbol Description Electrodes supplied sterile Inspect packaging before use. Electrodes remain sterile as long as the seal or pouch is not opened or damaged. Discard needle electrodes in a puncture-resistant sharps container following approved procedures for disposal of medical sharps. 2. Reusable Needle Electrodes If the following symbols are absent from the original device label, the devices may be reused and resterilized. Symbol Description Do not reuse Do not re-sterilize Clean Wipe with soft cloth dipped in mild detergent or alcohol Sterilize Sterilize using Ethylene Oxide gas (ETO), or steam autoclave. Remove electrical stimulator probes and felt-pads before sterilizing. Autoclave Steam autoclave at 120°C (250°F) and 103kPa (15 psi) for 15 minutes. For detailed information, refer to the instructions provided by the autoclave manufacturer. ETO For detailed information, refer to the instructions provided by the sterilization equipment manufacturer. 3. Reusable Surface Electrodes, Lead Wires, and Stimulating Bar Electrodes If the following symbol is absent from the original device label, the devices may be reused. Symbol Description Clean 1. Wash electrodes using water with detergents/ enzymatic products (i.e. Dawn Ultra dish detergent) to remove foreign material including electrode paste, gel, or other adhesives. 2. Use a soft, clean brush to apply enough gentle friction to remove foreign materials. 3. Rinse thoroughly and verify residue has been completely removed. Disinfect 1. Disinfect electrodes that may have had contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin with a high level disinfectant (e.g. Cidex®, Metricide®, or Resert™) 2. Consult with your facility’s infection control policies for guidance in selecting the appropriate disinfection products. Noncorrosive disinfecting agents are preferred. 3. Electrode cables and electrodes that come in contact with intact skin but not mucous membranes may be disinfected with an intermediate-level surface disinfectant (e.g. Envirocide®, MetriGuard®, or Cavi Wipes™) 4. Follow product specific disinfectant instructions found on disinfectant labels. 5. For maximum product life, do not expose electrodes to prolonged soaking or cleaning with corrosive agents (e.g. bleach water) 4.
