It offers excellent position control for elbow extension. The position is fixed at the time of fabrication according to the specifications stated on the order form. Wearing time in the Banana Peel must be built up over a few weeks, while observing the skin for undo stress. CASTING The Banana Peel is non-adjustable. The trick is to determine which angle is appropriate and manageable for the patient. When casting, give the arm comfortable extension. Avoid being too aggressive so the pressure from the brace will be tolerated. Apply two layers of stockinette and apply buffer strip to the outside. Wrap quickly with fiberglass, getting two layers of coverage. Hold the elbow at the desired corrected angle while the fiberglass sets. The cast should extend from just proximal of the wrist to almost into the armpit. This will give the patient the most comfort and control when the brace is worn. CONSTRUCTION The Banana Peel shell is fabricated from moderately pliable plastic according to your patient’s measurements. The bicep cuffs and forearm cuffs are made of closed cell foam. All straps are velcro. You may choose from ten different velcro colors and may, if you like, select a trim for the straps from our wide selection of decorative ribbons. TIPS Clean with a sponge, soft brush, mild soap and warm water. Towel dry, then allow a few hours for thorough drying. Do not dry with heat. Adjustments to plastic and foam Banana Peels are easy using a heat gun with either a little heat and lots of pressure, or lots of heat and very little pressure.
