About Syphilis Infection & Detection Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum. According to the World Health Organization, every year about 5.6 million new syphilis infections are acquired.1 The presence of an active syphilis infection can be confirmed by the detection of two distinct anti odies: treponemal and nontreponemal. The presence of treponemal antibodies can b indicate a Treponema pallidum infection, but does not indicate if the infection is active.
