Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialisys (CAPD and APD) Components of Peritoneal dialysis kit can be the following: • Absorbent and waterproof sterile sheet to create a sterile field • Sterile sheet with a cut, hole and adhesive • Gloves, various sizes (latex, nitrile, vinyl) • Sterile gauze pads (in cotton or non-woven fabric) with Y-shaped or straight cut gauze to create a dressing around the catheter • Masks to avoid contamination • Air-permeable adhesive non-woven fabric plasters • Catheter protective pockets (various models) This method foresees the introduction of an exchange liquid in the peritoneal cavity and the use of peritoneum (thin membrane surrounding abdominal viscera) as semipermeable membrane. It is usually performed at the patient’s home. Dialysis solution (water with salt and other additives) flows from a bag through a permanent catheter into abdomen.
