Hausmann has introduced 30 new products since our last catalog and we have updated the design on 10 products. BARIATRICS IS A FACT Merriam-Webster defines BARIATRIC as “relating to or specializing in the treatment of obesity.” Bariatric Medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. Obesity is defined as being clinically overweight and having body weight more than 20% greater than recommended for the relevant height. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 34.9% of adults older than 20 years of age were obese in a 2011-12 study. While there was no significant change from a 200304 study, it was determined that there was a significant increase in women over the age of 60 going from 31.5% to 38.1%. It is estimated that the direct medical costs for obesity in 2009 were $152 billion. In 2012, that number was projected at $190 billion, representing nearly 21% of annual medical spending in the United States. Doctors and other caregivers in every specialty and market, including hospital, physician practice, and long-term care, must deal with obesity. As advances continue in the treatment of obesity and conditions associated with being overweight, patients are living longer and are more mobile, allowing them better access to healthcare. According to a recent hospital survey, obesity continues to challenge hospital staff as the rising admissions of obese patients lead to increases in workerrelated injuries, a greater need for worker training, and escalating equipment costs. In addition to making physical renovations, hospitals have had to purchase larger beds, tables, and other equipment designed to care for obese patients.
