In a recent interview, he opined: “We need to design for the future. And that means we need to design with notions of intelligence and the digitalization of the world, of the reduction of materials, of the reduction of energy.” Nowhere is this this belief more apparent than in Public’s design—a system of highly versatile elements that can be reconfigured as an organization grows and evolves. This adaptability eliminates the need to acquire a new system and dispose of the old—good for both the environment and the bottom line. Public uses a minimal amount of materials to achieve a system that transforms every part of the office— including individual desks—into places for collaboration. It’s the first office system to support casual work and provide comfort at the desk, in circulation spaces, and in group areas—all within a consistent design vocabulary. Herman Miller’s Design Protocol Our commitment to corporate sustainability naturally includes minimizing the environmental impact of each of our products. Our Design for Environment team (DfE) applies environmentally sensitive design standards to both new and existing Herman Miller products. The DfE Design Protocol goes beyond regulatory compliance to thoroughly evaluate new product designs in four key areas: • Material Chemistry and Safety of Inputs— What chemicals are in the materials we specify, and are they the safest available? • Disassembly—Can we take products apart at the end of their useful life, to recycle their materials? • Recyclability—Do the materials contain recycled content, and more importantly, can the materials be recycled at the end of the product’s useful life? • LCA—Have we optimized the product based on the entire life cycle? level* Certification Public Office Landscape is level 3 certified.
