Project Overview

The BBC Mailbox project involved the installation of 27 state-of-the-art digital studios by IAC Acoustics at the BBC's new broadcasting center in Birmingham. This facility spans 100,000 square feet and replaces the previous Pebble Mill location. The project presented unique design challenges due to its location within a multi-use building that includes hotels, shops, and apartments.

Moduline Building System

IAC Acoustics utilized their Moduline™ Building System, chosen for its lightweight and flexible design, which was crucial given the building's low weight-loading capacity. The system features 100mm thick acoustic panels, Noise-Lock doors and windows, and internal tuner panels, ensuring excellent acoustic performance.

Studio Design

The studios include a variety of spaces such as control rooms, voiceover booths, radio studios, and a full-scale TV studio. Each studio is designed as a 'room-within-a-room' with floating floors and anti-vibration mountings. Custom-designed vision panels and acoustic doors with twin magnetic seals are integrated into the structure.

Acoustic Features

Acoustic plaques made of wood, metal, and fabric are used to enhance sound quality, with ceilings finished with acoustic metal tiles. The studios are equipped with IAC STC-53 rated Noise-Lock® acoustic doors, customized for various needs.

Drama Suite

The drama suite, home to the radio soap 'The Archers,' features extensive glazing for public viewing and specialized fittings for sound effects, including carpet and hardwood flooring, 'false' doors, and sinks with running water.

Project Management

The project was managed by IAC over 18 months, involving 25 acoustic fitters and 3 site managers, resulting in a cutting-edge studio environment for the BBC.
