The TPS® (Tissue Polypeptide Specific Antigen) is a tumor marker used for managing breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. It provides early insights into tumor changes by measuring cytokeratin 18, a component of epithelial cells. This marker is particularly useful for monitoring treatment and disease progression.
Cytokeratins
Cytokeratins are intermediate filaments in eukaryotic cells, crucial for cell integrity and processes like division and motility. Cytokeratin 8, 18, and 19 are prevalent in epithelial cells and remain consistent during malignant transformations.
TPS® Functionality
TPS® is a quantitative immunoassay that measures soluble cytokeratin fragments in serum and plasma. Elevated levels indicate tumor cell activity, aiding in early detection of recurrence and treatment monitoring.
