CONTINUITY PLANNING

Product catalog summary
Introduction
This document discusses the importance of continuity planning for Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) to ensure permanent access to medical imaging data. It highlights potential risks to PACS servers, such as environmental failures and disasters, and emphasizes the need for reliable continuity solutions beyond simple data backups.

Risks and Challenges
PACS servers are vulnerable to various unpredictable events like air conditioning failures, flooding, fires, and vandalism, which can lead to system breakdowns. Recovery from such failures can be time-consuming, affecting data availability and institutional reputation.

Solutions for Continuity Planning
The document outlines four solutions offered by iQ-SYSTEM PACS for effective continuity planning:
  • Full Back-up PACS (iQ-WEB): Acts as a backup for any existing PACS, allowing automatic synchronization and easy data recovery post-disaster.
  • Virtual PACS Server (iQ-ROUTER PRO): Functions as a gateway proxy, enabling seamless data access from multiple PACS servers without reconfiguration.
  • Thick Client Access to Multiple Sources (iQ-VIEW): Provides simultaneous access to multiple data sources, ensuring continuity even if primary servers are impacted.
  • Thin Web-based Image Distribution Architecture (iQ-WEBX): Offers web-based access to secondary PACS, facilitating data retrieval and synchronization post-disaster.

SOLUTIONS - CONTINUITY PLANNING PACS continuity planning beyond back-up copies The data archived in any PACS is very sensitive. It has to be available at all locations within a medical facility around the clock, 365 days a year, even if something unpredictable has happened. There it doesn’t mean that data can be daily work and even on their reputa- events that may risk the integrity of a accessed immediately, since the tion has always been extremely high. SOLUTIONS - CONTINUITY PLANNING It is crucial to rely on a continuity system. Stored imaging data and reports may be accessed using alternative channels (either temporarily or permanently). This way, the whole system can keep on working normally with a minimum of inconveniences even in case of an IT disaster. Using iQ-SYSTEM PACS, we offer the following 4 solutions for the planning of a convenient PACS continuity system: A. Full back-up PACS (iQ-WEB) B. Virtual PACS Server (iQ-ROUTER PRO) C.  Thick client access to multiple sources (iQ-VIEW) D. Thin web-based image distribution architecture (iQ-WEBX)...

CONTINUITY PLANNING-4

A. FULL Back-up PACS (iq-web) iQ-WEB can be the back-up PACS of any existing PACS available on the market. Data will be sent from the modalities to both, primary and back-up PACS. Both PACS may synchronize automatically. Scenario: Primary PACS has been impacted by a disaster Existing PACS viewing stations can easily be adjusted to load studies from iQ-WEB (Back-up PACS) Post disaster data recovery: Automatic resynchronization from iQ-WEB to the primary PACS Viewing station iQ-WEB as back-up PACS Primary PACS (e.g. iQ-WEB) Regular operation mode Disaster mode Viewing station Viewing station

B. Virtual PACS Server (iq-router PRO) Thanks to the functionalities of iQ-ROUTER PRO, it is possible to use it as a Gateway that serves as a proxy between the modalities and various PACS. This virtual PACS acts as a DICOM store SCP / SCU to the local modalities. This way, the modalities and viewing stations only interact with the proxy. The proxy communicates with the PACS servers . Scenario: One of the PACS servers has been impacted by a disaster Data is automatically obtained from the other PACS servers without the users even noticing; modalities and viewing stations do not have to be reconfigured...

C. Thick client access to multiple sources (iq-view) iQ-VIEW is one of the few PACS viewing stations on the market that can query, retrieve and read seamlessly from multiple sources at a time. Thus, it provides simultaneous access to an unlimited number of sources without reconfiguration. Scenario: Primary PACS server has been impacted by a disaster Low risk for the viewing stations to be impacted iQ-VIEW can smoothly access any secondary PACS (e.g. iQ-WEB) Viewing stations have also been impacted by the disaster Thin web based image distribution architecture; for details see page 7 (solution...

D. Thin web-based image distribution architecture (iQ-WEBX) iQ-WEBX can act as a secondary thin client reading software to query, retrieve and read from an unlimited number of sources simultaneously. As a secondary PACS, iQ-WEBX can receive directly images from the modalities and/or retrieve the primary PACS server to look for further, updated information at any time. Scenario: Viewing stations have been impacted by a disaster; primary PACS is still working and accessible Secondary PACS can be accessed via iQ-X, the web-based DICOM Viewer included in iQ-WEBX Modalities send images to primary...
