In any 90-degree arc there is one angle at which an X-ray beam will accurately shadow the tooth on film. This is the bisecting angle: the bisection of the long axis of the tooth and the angle of the film. The X-ray beam is directed perpendicular to the bisecting angle for the perfect undistorted image.
