The Furlong® Hemiarthroplasty System • Cemented stem with bipolar, modular bipolar or physiological head options provides clinical flexibility to match surgeon preference • Fully modular system designed to allow the surgeon to select the implants which best meet the patients clinical needs • Easy to use effective instrumentation designed to enhance clinical outcome • JRI Orthopaedics Limited was established in 1969 by an orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Ronald Furlong, when he introduced the Muller cemented hip to the UK market. • Developers of the world’s first H-A.C. coated hip replacement prosthesis...

Furlong® Cemented Hemiarthroplasty Clinical Evidence 72 Implants had been inserted into 71 different patients by 35 different Surgeons of all grades. No dislocations in any of the 71 patients who had bipolar hips inserted during the study period2 Comparable with results of total hip replacement (THR) but without the risk of dislocation2 Results are significantly better than would be expected with conventional Hemiarthroplasty in this group of patients2 Eleven of the sixteen patients without comorbidities who were able to walk 1 mile before fracture were able to do so at review. Mean follow up...

Physiological Head The JRI Physiological Head is manufactured from HNSS and available in sizes 39mm-54mm (1mm increments), 56mm and 58mm. HNSS increases biocompatibility and provides greater fatigue strength and corrosion resistance over conventional medical grade stainless steel. Modular Bipolar Head The Modular Bipolar Head is designed to provide surgeons with improved options for management of offset and leg length. The inner articulation is achieved with the choice of 3 JRI Orthopaedics Furlong 28mm CoCr heads. NB: If using Modular Bipolar Heads please refer to the specific surgical technique....

Furlong® Cemented Operative Technique 1 Correct positioning of the patient on the operating table is very important. The hip joint is exposed using a preferred surgical approach for hemiarthroplasty. The fractured femoral head is removed using the Femoral Head Extractor (10-01-27). A light tap may help engagement and purchase into the femoral head. If required, trimming of the fracture line can be performed. A trial stem can also be used to help identify where the resection should be and a line made using a diathermy probe or skin marker. The femoral head size can then be estimated using the...

The smallest XXS rasp (50-00-14) is used to prepare the proximal femur. The large Tommy Bar (10-25-28) should be used to control version. Move the rasp anteriorly and posteriorly to check anterior / posterior stability. When movement only occurs between the handle and the rasp, not between the rasp and bone, the rasp is correctly sized. Care should be taken to lateralise the rasps as they are inserted. At this point, if required, the appropriate trial stem can be carefully inserted using the Stem Impactor (50-99-34). The trial stem must match the last size rasp used for a secure femoral fit The...

The preferred cementing technique is now used. Modern techniques recommend the use of a cement plug, lavage, drying of the femoral canal and retrograde filling with a cement gun. Making sure the tibia is vertical, the definitive femoral stem should be inserted in neutral alignment, to ensure a continuous circumferential cement mantle, using the Stem Impactor and inserted to the depth determined by the trial prosthesis. The depth of the stem should be determined by the height of the centre of rotation of the femoral head on the contralateral side. If the same size rasp, trial and definitive stem...
