Product catalog summary
Specification of Plasma Fractionator Evaflux 5A
Model 5A10 and 5A20 are hollow fiber plasma fractionators made from ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer. They have an inner diameter of 175 μm and a wall thickness of 40 μm. The housing is made of polycarbonate resin. The membrane surface area is 1.0 m² for model 5A10 and 2.0 m² for model 5A20. The outer dimensions are 45φ x 280 L mm for 5A10 and 57φ x 280 L mm for 5A20. Priming volumes are approximately 85 mL outside and 82 mL inside the hollow fibers for 5A10, and approximately 108 mL outside and 150 mL inside for 5A20. The filled liquid is sterile water, and sterilization is done via gamma-ray irradiation.
Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH)
FH is an autosomal dominantly-inherited disease characterized by a congenital absence of low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDL-R), leading to elevated plasma LDL and cholesterol levels. Common clinical signs include hypercholesterolemia, tendon xanthoma, and coronary artery disease. Treatment guidelines vary by country, with LDL apheresis recommended for patients who do not respond to diet and drug therapy.
LDL Apheresis and Treatment
LDL apheresis is a treatment option for patients with FH who do not respond to conventional therapies. It involves the removal of LDL from the blood, which can help prevent the progression of atherosclerosis. The Evaflux 5A device is used in double/cascade filtration plasmapheresis, effectively removing LDL, Lp(a), and fibrinogen while returning albumin and HDL to the patient.
Performance of DFPP
Double Filtration Plasmapheresis (DFPP) using Evaflux 5A achieves a high removal rate of risk factors for arteriosclerosis, such as LDL, Lp(a), and fibrinogen, with removal rates of 60-80% per session. DFPP treatment is conducted at two-week intervals over several years to lower risk factors and prevent atherosclerosis progression.
Figures and Data
Figures illustrate the sieving coefficient of Evaflux, indicating membrane permeability, and the removal rate of LDL, Lp(a), and fibrinogen when processing plasma. Evaflux 5A effectively removes high molecular weight proteins, improving microcirculation while minimizing the need for albumin substitution.

What is Familial Hypercholesterolemia (“FH”) ? When should LDL apheresis commence? “FH” is an autosomal dominantly-inherited disease due to a congenital absence of low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) , that transports cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein particles into cells. A congenital absence of LDL-R results clinically in elevated concentrations of plasma Functional Homozygotes with LDL >500 mg/dL Functional Heterozygotes with no known cardiovascular disease but LDL ≧ 300 mg/dL Homozygous FH Pattern of Inheritance Inheritance of the abnormal gene from both parents Inheritance of the abnormal...

Double / Cascade Filtration Plasmapheresis Flow Diagram of Cascade Filtration (CF) with Evaflux 5A Double/ Cascade Filtration plasmapheresis is one of the LDL apheresis methods with the [ in combination with Centrifugal Cell Separator ] following principle. Plasma Pump Blood cells High molecular weight substances From patient Low molecular weight substances (Albumin etc.) Membrane Plasma Separator or Centrifugal Cell Separator 2 Whole blood is separated into blood cells and plasma. Plasma Fractionator The plasma fraction containing high molecular weight such as Lipids is discarded. Centrifugal...

Removal rate of risk factors It is reported that DFPP using Evaflux 5A achieved the high removal rate of LDL , Lp(a) and Total cholesterol, LDL, Lp(a), and fibrinogen were removed by 60-80% after each session of fibrinogen, which are considered as the risk factors for arteriosclerosis.
