Mondrian tables are named for Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), one of the decisive contributors to the development of abstract painting. “Beginning as a painter of the Dutch landscape under the influence of Van Gogh, Mondrian later became aware of Cubism, which he absorbed and transcended… his mature work is a quest for essences, in which the vertical and horizontal are charged to create maximum content through minimal means.” ©Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Pure elements – wood, steel and glass – are shaped and formed into a lasting image of strength and beauty. Simplicity is found in the geometry of Mondrian: a marriage of angles and shapes inspired by the Cubist movement of the early 20th century. These artists, beginning with Picasso and Braque, created a world of irreducibly pure forms, which they equated with the fundamental laws of nature. Mondrian tables follow key elements of this Cubist style: the emphasis on structure instead of external appearances, and the relativity narrow range of tones, predicated on architecture. The solid steel frame is finished beautifully in brushed chrome, with joints finely polished. The hardwood form supporting the glass is composed of a series of angles that provide contrast. The tempered glass top has a subtle arc on its outer edges, which are chamfered and polished. 5550-36-36-16
