London's second largest football stadium was completed in 2006 and represented a new type of arena with its consequent emphasis on maximising the spectator experience. The building envelope specialist Prater was assigned the task of completing the translucent polycarbonate roof. The Velodrome is the most sustainable venue on the Olympic Park in terms of design and construction. Prater specified recycled materials where possible, such as the aluminium coil used for the roof sheets, to ensure the roof met the sustainability targets. The roof lighting reduced the need for artificial lighting, natural ventilation minimised the need for air conditioning and water saving fittings were installed to collect rainwater for reuse.
