Sacroiliac Joint Anatomy The sacroiliac (SI) joint is formed by the connection of sacrum and iliac bones, which are joined by strong ligaments. The sacrum supports the spine. The SI joints acts as shock-absorbers, limiting abnormal motion and transmitting load from the upper body to the hips and legs. The SI joint is stabilized posterioly by ligaments and muscles. The normal SI joint moves approximately 2-4mm in any directions. Motion decreases with aging. The sacroiliac ligaments in women are less stiff allowing the mobility necessary for childbirth.
