Vitamin B12 is crucial for blood cell formation and is absorbed in the small intestine with the help of intrinsic factor, a glycoprotein produced by gastric parietal cells. A deficiency in intrinsic factor leads to vitamin B12 undersupply and pernicious anemia.
Type A gastritis is an autoimmune condition where antibodies attack gastric parietal cells and intrinsic factor, reducing vitamin B12 absorption. Causes include genetic factors, stomach surgery, chronic gastric inflammation, medications, or an unbalanced diet.
Symptoms include fatigue, increased heart rate, paleness, indigestion, abdominal pain, neurological issues like numbness, unsteady gait, and cognitive disturbances. Pernicious anemia can progress to funicular myelosis.
Diagnosis involves clinical symptoms and laboratory tests for antibodies against parietal cells, H+/K+ ATPase, and intrinsic factor.
