The lymphatic system transports excess water, proteins and waste products from the connective tissue back into the bloodstream. During this transportation process, lymph is cleansed, filtered and concentrated. Many immune responses take place in the lymph nodes. When the vessels become congested, blocked or damaged, liquids can accumulate in connective tissue, leading to edemata and fibrosis.
