Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious acute respiratory illness caused by Influenza A or B viruses. It affects the upper (nose, throat) and lower (lungs) respiratory tracts, causing symptoms like sudden high fever, headache, muscle pain, and general weakness. According to the WHO Report (2014), influenza affects 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 people severely, with 250,000 to 500,000 deaths annually, and a mortality rate of 10% in high-risk groups. The prevalence rate is between 5% and 20%.
