Healthcare providers being trained in bag valve mask (BVM) ventilation are generally taught to ventilate until the chest rises. However, studies have shown that the delivery of incorrect rates and volumes is common. Inadvertent hyperventilation (the accidental delivery of an excessive minute volume) has been shown to cause increased cerebral ischemia, decreased coronary perfusion pressure and gastric insufflation.
