Product catalog summary

Introduction
Pennsylvania Hospital Gastrointestinal Associates, Ltd. (PHGI) is a private physician-owned group in Philadelphia, PA, specializing in outpatient gastroenterology and endoscopy procedures. The practice performs over 9,000 endoscopic procedures annually and has incorporated capsule endoscopy to enhance diagnostic capabilities for small bowel abnormalities.

Capsule Endoscopy Implementation
In November 2007, PHGI introduced capsule endoscopy to evaluate obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and diagnose conditions like Crohn's and celiac disease. This decision allowed PHGI to retain patients within their practice rather than referring them elsewhere, thereby strengthening patient relationships and satisfaction.

Operational Efficiency
Capsule endoscopy is scheduled to maximize productivity, with capsules administered early in the morning and follow-ups conducted later in the day. This integration has not disrupted workflow, allowing physicians to manage their time effectively.

Technology and Image Quality
PHGI initially used a non-Olympus product for capsule endoscopy. However, after evaluating the Olympus Endo Capsule, the practice switched due to superior image quality. A blind test conducted by Clinical Director Stephanie Diem confirmed unanimous preference for Olympus images among staff.

Financial Considerations
PHGI adopted Olympus' Cost-Per-Capsule (CPC) program, which eliminated upfront costs and allowed payment per procedure. This flexible financing option helps manage cash flow and adapt to technological advancements without significant capital investment.

Conclusion
The introduction of Olympus Endo Capsule has enhanced PHGI's diagnostic capabilities, improved patient retention, and provided financial flexibility. The superior image quality of the Olympus system contributes to more accurate diagnoses, underscoring the importance of technology in patient care.

The four-room Washington Square Endoscopy Center performs more than 9,000 upper and lower endoscopic procedures per year, while the nine-room PHGI office sees more than 9,500 visits annually, as well as also performing more than 100 capsule endoscopies per year. Capsule endoscopy is used to evaluate obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, as well as to help physicians diagnose Crohns, celiac disease, and other small bowel conditions. The procedure is typically ordered after a patient’s upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy return negative and is intended to check for small bowel disease that may cause pain, low blood count and blood in bowel movements. Olympus Endo Capsule Update-2

Keeping Patients Close to Home The introduction of capsule endoscopy was a strategic move for PHGI. Although it was only a relatively small percentage of their patient base that presented with indications necessitating the capsule procedure, the facility’s management knew they were missing an opportunity by not offering it. By adding capsule endoscopy to their portfolio, PHGI doctors no longer needed to refer patients outside of the office. It didn’t take us long to realize that we were sending patients out for something that we could potentially offer as well. Stephanie Diem, RN Clinical Director...
