- The Multiplex Delivery System (MDS) is designed for use with rodents, utilizing induction chambers and non-rebreathing (NRB) systems. It ensures proper flow rates to anesthesia stations via secondary flow meters placed after the primary flow meter and vaporizer.
- Gases follow the path of least resistance, and simple stopcocks can lead to uneven gas distribution, risking CO2 buildup and respiratory/metabolic acidosis.
- Recommendations include using a 0-12 LPM O2 flow meter for systems with more than three stations, and a 0-4 LPM flow meter for three or fewer stations. Minimum O2 flow rates are 2 LPM for induction chambers and 500cc/min for mice or 1 LPM for rats in NRB systems.
- To set the primary flow meter, sum the desired flow rates from the secondary meters. For example, a setup with one induction chamber (2 LPM) and two NRB systems (500cc/min each) requires a primary flow meter setting of 3 LPM.
- The MDS includes a safety valve on the primary flow meter that releases pure oxygen at 6 PSI to prevent damage to equipment. This is safe for the environment.
- The system is color-coded for easy tracking of gas lines, using a unique sequence of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and white.
- For installation on a Portable Anesthesia Machine (PAM), use the provided 3/8" stainless steel rod. For other systems, a Universal Mounting Bracket is needed.
- Colored tubing can be cut to fit the operator's needs and the position of appliances.

I. Principle of Operation: A. The MDS is designed specifically for use with rodents using one or more induction chambers and one or more non-rebreathing (NRB) systems. E. There is a safety valve included with the MDS system that is installed on the primary flow meter. This automatic safety pressure relief valve opens at 6 PSI and releases pure oxygen (not anesthetic) into the workplace. This prevents any damage to the vaporizer and ancillary instrumentation. The safety relief valve is an integral part of the MDS system and can be installed on almost any inhalant anesthesia system.
