Suction Catheters • Suction catheters are long flexible tubes that are used in intensive care to remove fluids from the mouth and airways of critically ill patients. • The suction catheter is used together with suction tubing connected to a waste collection container (suction canister) and a suction source. • To be used by connection to the suction source with Pennine suction connecting tubing, MF, FFM or FFM/VC ty

• Removal of these fluids is important to ensure the lungs remain clear and the patient is able to breathe properly. • The catheter is gently inserted into the patient’s airway and suction applied, thus removing any secretions or fluids. • Catheters are available with standard funnel connectors, or tapered connector with vacuum finger control. • Suction will be performed by physiotherapists, paramedics, nurses or doctors.
