Confocal Endomicroscopy

Product catalog summary
Introduction to Endomicroscopy
Endomicroscopy is an advanced endoscopic imaging technique that allows for in vivo microscopy of the mucosal layer with cellular resolution during gastrointestinal endoscopy. This is achieved through a miniaturized confocal microscope integrated into the endoscope's tip, enabling detailed examination of the mucosa.

Technical Specifications
The endomicroscope uses blue laser light to interact with contrast agents applied topically or intravenously, producing images from the mucosal surface to its deepest layers. The confocal imaging system ISC-1000 provides microscopic visualization without specific diagnostic or therapeutic use.

Clinical Applications and Benefits
Endomicroscopy is beneficial for diagnosing various gastrointestinal diseases with high accuracy rates (91% in the UGI tract and 93% in the LGI tract). It is safe, with complications occurring in only about 1% of procedures. The technique allows for targeted biopsies, reducing the need for conventional biopsies.

Molecular Imaging
Recent advancements include molecular imaging using fluoresceine-labeled antibodies targeting the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), offering new diagnostic possibilities and potential for personalized therapy in colorectal cancer.

Research and Findings
Studies have demonstrated the ability of endomicroscopy to differentiate colorectal lesions based on cellular, vascular, and nuclear changes. The technique has shown high accuracy in differentiating low-grade from high-grade dysplasia.

Training and Resources
PENTAX offers a comprehensive training program and an online platform for learning about endomicroscopy. A DVD with examination sequences and technique explanations is also available.

Conclusion
Endomicroscopy provides a direct in vivo display of histology, allowing endoscopists to make accurate assessments of tissue architecture and cellular changes, thus enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities in gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Confocal Endomicroscopy-1

Endomicroscopy. More than meets the eye. New horizons in diagnostics and therapy. Endomicroscopy is an innovative and unique endoscopic imaging modality. It allows in vivo microscopy of the whole mucosal layer with cellular resolution during ongoing gastrointestinal endoscopy. This is achieved by a miniaturized confocal microscope, which is embedded into the distal tip of an otherwise normal endoscope. The endomicroscope can be placed at any area of interest within the intestine during the ongoing examination. The blue laser light of the endomicroscope interacts with contrast agents within the mucosa, which have to be applied topically or intraveniously. This results in endomicroscopic images from the surface down to the deepest parts of the mucosal layer. Histology. In vivo.
