Product catalog summary
Introduction
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) encompasses progressive lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Patients often experience symptoms like dyspnea, cough, and chest tightness, which can worsen during acute exacerbations. Airway Clearance Techniques (ACTs) are known to enhance mucus clearance and potentially improve quality of life and reduce the need for mechanical ventilation during exacerbations.

Aim
The study aimed to evaluate the effects of a new airway clearance technology (Simeox, Physio-Assist, France) compared to manual physiotherapy in hospitalized COPD patients with chest congestion.

Methods
The study involved 10 COPD patients with acute exacerbations and excessive mucus congestion. They were treated over 5 days with either the Simeox device or manual physiotherapy, with 5 patients in each group. The Simeox device uses a vibratory pneumatic signal to mobilize mucus for expectoration. Spirometry, symptoms, CAT score, usability, and safety were assessed.

Results
Participants had an average age of 65 years, with 7 men and 3 women. Improvements in mucus clearance and symptoms were similar between the groups. However, the Simeox group showed a significant improvement in FEV1 and CAT scores, indicating better lung function and quality of life. No adverse events were reported, and patients quickly adapted to using the device autonomously.

Conclusions
Preliminary data suggest that the Simeox airway clearance technology is safe and offers additional benefits for COPD patients with severe chronic bronchitis symptoms or bronchiectasis. Further randomized studies with larger patient groups and longer follow-up are recommended to confirm these findings.
