Product catalog summary

Introduction to PET Imaging: Positron-emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear imaging technique used to observe the metabolic or molecular activity of organs by detecting gamma-ray emissions from positrons in an injected radiopharmaceutical solution. It is primarily used in oncology, neurology, and cardiology for diagnosis and monitoring disease progression during treatment.

Challenges in Radiopharmaceutical Production: Currently, radiopharmaceuticals are produced by major private centers using costly and complex processes involving large cyclotrons. This limits the availability to a few molecules, despite over 200 being of clinical interest. The production facilities are often far from medical centers, complicating logistics and limiting access to specific radiopharmaceuticals with short half-lives, impacting patient care.

iMiGiNE System Overview: The iMiGiNE system, developed by PMB, addresses these limitations by combining a cyclotron with a robotized radiochemistry room and an automated quality control device. This allows for localized production of radiopharmaceuticals, enhancing access and enabling personalized molecular imaging.

Key Features of iMiGiNE:

  • Proximity Production: The system is compact, fitting within 50-cm-thick concrete walls and occupying less than 100 sqm, allowing production near patients.
  • Automation: The process from isotope production to syringe-filling is automated, reducing the need for human resources.
  • Versatility: Utilizes microfluidic techniques to produce multiple specific molecules daily.
  • Research Facilitation: Provides a tool for research teams to produce and test new radiopharmaceuticals quickly.
  • Improved Patient Treatment: Enables "one dose - one patient" production, allowing for better disease characterization and treatment monitoring.

Technical Specifications: The system includes a 12 MeV superconducting cyclotron for producing various radioisotopes (e.g., 18F, 11C, 68Ga) and a robotized radiochemistry room for radiosynthesis and automated quality control.

Contact Information: PMB is located in Peynier, France, and is part of the ALCEN industrial group, which operates in various sectors including medical and healthcare.

Automated PET Radiopharmaceutical Production iMiGiNE-1

Towards Personalized Molecular Imaging Automated Radiopharmaceutical Production System for PET Imaging Combining an iMiTRACE cyclotron with a robotized iMiLAB radiochemistry room and an automated quality control device, iMiGiNE allows medical centers to free themselves from current limitations in the production and distribution of PET radiopharmaceuticals. Positron-emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear imaging technique used to observe metabolic or molecular activity of an organ, by detecting the gamma-ray emissions produced by the positrons contained in an injected radiopharmaceutical solution. PET systems can be used to make a diagnosis in the fields of oncology, neurology and cardiology and to monitor the progression of the disease while the patient receives treatment. Currently, the radiopharmaceuticals used in PET imaging are generally produced and distributed by major private centers, using a heavy and costly process. These centers produce radioactive atoms with large size cyclotrons, then synthesize those atoms with targeting agents of clinical interest, before testing and injecting them in a patient. Due to financial and technical constraints, the supply of radiopharmaceuticals is limited to a few molecules, even though more than 200 could be of clinical interest. The production facilities are located far from the medical and research centers : in addition to raising logistical issues, this distance eliminates the opportunity to have access to more specific radiopharmaceuticals, whose half-life is often short. This limited access has direct consequences on patient care : health facilities are unable to use specific molecules, which would help better characterize the disease and eventually, provide patients with more efficient treatments and adequate care.
