Product catalog summary
Overview: The BSD-500 Hyperthermia System is a medical device designed to deliver therapeutic heat to malignant tumors, particularly effective when combined with radiation therapy for recurrent or progressive tumors. It is FDA approved for palliative treatment and can administer both superficial and interstitial hyperthermia.
Indications for Use: The system is indicated for use alone or with radiation therapy for managing solid surface or subsurface malignant tumors, including melanoma, squamous or basal-cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, or sarcoma, especially those that are progressive or recurrent.
System Components: The BSD-500 includes microwave applicators, temperature probes, an operator console, and various accessories. Applicator models (MA-100, MA-120, MA-151, MA-251) are tailored for specific tumor sizes and locations.
Clinical Studies: Clinical studies indicate that 37.4% of patients experienced complete tumor regression, with 83.7% showing some regression. Adverse effects include burns, pain, ulceration, and infection.
Procedure: Treatments are typically administered twice a week, with each session lasting about an hour, maintaining an intratumoral temperature of 42.5°C for 60 minutes.
Contraindications and Warnings: Hyperthermia is contraindicated for patients with decreased pain response or circulation in the heated area and those with cardiac pacemakers due to electromagnetic interference. Careful monitoring is essential to minimize risks.
Precautions: Proper placement of temperature probes and adherence to aseptic techniques are crucial. Daily calibration of temperature probes is necessary for accurate monitoring.
Adverse Reactions: Common side effects include burns, pain, ulceration, and infection. Potential adverse effects, though not observed in trials, include cataracts and male sterility due to inadvertent heating.
Introduction: This document discusses the effects of microwave radiation and hyperthermia on biological tissues, focusing on the BSD-500 Hyperthermia System by BSD Medical Corporation.
Effects of Microwave Radiation: High doses or prolonged exposure can lead to sterility, exacerbate pre-existing diseases, unpredictably affect drug activity, and cause thermal stress, especially in patients with cardiovascular impairments.
References: The document cites studies on the biological effects of electromagnetic waves and hyperthermia by authors such as Murca, Ferris, Buchta, and Song.
Contact Information: BSD Medical Corporation provides contact details for further inquiries about the BSD-500 Hyperthermia System.

What are you doing for your recurrent cancer patients? BSD-500 • • • • No shielding room needed Portable FDA Approved for palliative treatment of certain tumors Delivers both superficial and interstitial hyperthermia BSD-500 used in Clinical Studies on recurrent and progressive: • • • • Hyperthermia is a therapy used to heat tumors. Research has shown that heat can damage cancer cells while also increasing the effect of radiation therapy in treating some tumors that are recurrent or progressive despite conventional therapy. While it has been known for hundreds of years that fevers can kill cancer...

Interstitial Hyperthermia Interstitial hyperthermia delivers the heat directly to the site of the tumor. Interstitial hyperthermia uses up to 24 small microwave antennas (1.2 mm in diameter) placed in the tumor. Temperature sensors (1.1 mm in diameter) measure the temperatures for treatment control. The microwave power delivered to the antennas can be adjusted in amplitude and phase to conform the heating pattern to the tumor. Interstitial Applicators The semi-rigid MA-251 microwave interstitial applicators can be inserted into 15.5 gauge (5 French) radiation implant catheters. The heating pattern...

Treatment Planning Software Performing interstitial hyperthermia requires the use of the BSD-500 built-in treatment planning program. Using this software, the size and shape of the tumor can be traced on a grid on the computer screen. Treatment plans can then be made by simulating the placement of antennae in and around the tumor. The power and phase of each channel can be set and adjusted on the screen. Each change in placement, power or phase will display the new simulated heating pattern. Trace tumor and position Calculate energy distribution Adjust phase and power to achieve desired heating...

Indications and Use of the BSD-500 Hyperthermia System DEVICE DESCRIPTION The BSD-500 Hyperthermia System delivers therapeutic heat (hyperthermia) to certain surface or subsurface malignant tumors (i.e., melanoma, squamous- or basal-cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, or sarcoma) by the external or interstitial application of electro-magnetic energy, and monitors the temperature of target and surrounding tissues by means of invasive temperature probes. In response to an operator-designated control probe, the BSD-500 Hyperthermia System automatically adjusts power to maintain the operator-set therapeutic...
