When it comes to self-monitoring of blood glucose, many people with diabetes want to incorporate diabetes management into their lifestyles more easily via leading-edge technology so they can benefit from increased flexibility and mobility. The iBGStar® connects to Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. Designed by listening to the needs and desires of people with diabetes, iBGStar® seamlessly integrates convenient and accurate1 blood glucose management with on-the-go decision-making support for people with diabetes using or starting to use insulin. The iBGStar® is already commercially available in 15 countries across four continents: Algeria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Philippines, the UK and USA. Connectivity and convenience The iBGStar® offers connectivity by plugging directly into the Dock Connector of the iPhone and iPod touch, so people with diabetes can choose to carry one less device. This meter works in conjunction with the iBGStar® Diabetes Manager App. After testing, results immediately appear on the full-colour touch screen and the patient can use the App for managing, analysing and communicating test results, including blood glucose, carbohydrate intake and insulin dosage. The standalone iBGStar® meter can store up to 300 test results with date and time, which will download automatically upon connection to the iPhone or iPod touch and the Apple devices themselves are able to store a nearly unlimited number of results, depending on device capacity. The iBGStar® Diabetes Manager App has an intuitive user interface and a range of convenient features that make it easy for users to manage their data. Scorecards show individual test results and are colour-coded to alert users of hypo- or hyperglycaemic values. Trend charts give users customisable views of their results and allow them to see whether values are within a settable, defined target range. The ‘share’ function enables users to select specific data to send as an e-mail, simplifying communication between them and their healthcare professionals. The iBGStar® thus provides reliable ‘real time’ information so that people with diabetes can feel confident to make diabetes-related decisions, even when they are on-the-go. The iBGStar® is based on an intelligent technology called Dynamic Electrochemistry which extracts a spectrum of information from the blood that is inaccessible to traditional electrochemical methods. This specific method compensates for interfering factors that can often distort blood glucose results, helping to ensure accurate and reliable blood glucose readings.

For medical journalists outside the U.S. only The iBGStar® is plasma-equivalent calibrated and comes in two different pre-set measurement units (mmol/L or mg/dL) that cannot be switched by the user. The result range is from 1.1 to 33.3 mmol/L or 20 to 600 mg/dL, respectively. Results are accurate at a haematocrit concentration between 20%-60%, at operating temperatures of 10°-40° Celsius, a relative humidity of up to 90%, and maximum altitudes of up to 3,048 meters.
