Product catalog summary
Overview: The document provides detailed information about the Phi-TEC Battery Testing Calorimeter (BTC) developed by HEL Ltd. for testing various types of batteries, including large batteries used in electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). The BTC is a modified version of the Phi-TEC I Adiabatic Reaction Calorimeter, designed for safety testing of Li-ion batteries under different conditions.
Specifications: The BTC can test battery components such as anodes, cathodes, electrolytes, and SEI, as well as complete batteries. It supports testing of overcharged, over-discharged, charged, discharged, and cycled batteries. The system is software-controlled with integral safety trips and can simulate battery abuse scenarios like shorting and overcharging.
Testing Capabilities: The BTC allows for testing to 'destruction' by placing batteries in a pressure cell to measure gas rates and temperature increases during decomposition. It also offers stability testing to determine the lowest temperature at which a battery starts to self-heat, using the Heat-wait-search test. Additionally, it provides quick screening data during battery development through a ramped sample test mode.
Design and Safety Features: The BTC features controlled heating to ensure even heat distribution, direct temperature sensing with eight different temperature measurements, and a compact design suitable for various battery types, including 18650, prismatic, polymer, coin, AA, and battery packs. It is safe for use in standard fume hoods and includes overpressure protection with a relief valve and rupture mechanism.
Custom and Standard Versions: The BTC is available in 'standard' and 'custom' versions. The standard version is compact and suitable for smaller batteries, while the custom version can accommodate larger batteries up to 35cm x 35cm, including those used in EVs, HEVs, military applications, and space aircraft.
Technical Advantages: The Phi-TEC BTC offers realistic data representation through controlled heating, critical for large batteries. It also provides flexibility in testing various battery sizes and types, ensuring comprehensive safety and performance analysis.

Battery Testing Calorimeter (BTC) from the Process Safety Experts The PHI-TEC is able to study : -• Battery components (anode, cathode, electrolyte, SEI) • Complete batteries • Overcharged or over discharged batteries • Charged, discharged and cycled batteries Even large batteries (EV and HEV, for example) can be directly tested to obtain safety, lifecycle and electrochemical efficiency data. BTC is a special version of the Phi-TEC I Adiabatic Reaction Calorimeter, modified to enable easy and reliable safety testing of Li-ion batteries of different sizes. This is possible under different conditions of battery use as well as undesirable modes of use. Depending on battery size to be tested, “standard” and “customised” versions of the BTC are available. www.helgroup.com The system is fully software controlled with integral safety trips. A software screenshot is shown here. Stability Testing Lowest temperature at which battery starts to self-heat can be accurately determined in the standard Heat-wait-search test. To assist with chemical development, the kinetics and energy release can be easily qualified. Phi-TEC also has a second test modes where the sample is ramped and this provides quick screening data during battery development Testing to “destruction” It is a also possible to place batteries in a pressure “cell” so that the decomposition can be allowed to proceed to “destruction” -allowing gas rates and temperature increase to be measured in the event of the battery decomposing in a closed space.
