  6. Advance the catheter to its full length and withdraw the needle, leaving the catheter in place.
  7. Infuse sterile saline through the catheter rapidly.
  8. Aspirate secretions and exudates through the catheter with a sterile syringe while the patient is coughing.
  9. Monitor the patient for dyspnea before and after removing the catheter.

  • Ensure proper immobilization of the patient to prevent injury or death.

Foal Tracheal Wash Catheter Sterilized using ethylene oxide Latex Free For use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. Description The Foal Tracheal Wash Catheter is a PTFE catheter with a proximal female Luer adapter. See individual package label for product specifications. Function The Foal Tracheal Wash Catheter is used to obtain a sample from the trachea and bronchi for cytological examination. Instructions for Use 1. Inspect packaging for sterility. Remove product from package and visually inspect for any damage. WARNING! Discard if product or packaging is damaged. Note! Anesthesia or sedation may be required. 2. Extend patient’s neck so that the nares point toward the ceiling. 3. Prepare skin over cricothyroid membrane or trachea according to standard hospital protocol. 4. Insert needle into tracheal lumen by puncturing cricothyroid or interannular membrane at a 45-degree angle. 5. Advance catheter to its full length and withdraw needle from the trachea, leaving the catheter in place. 6. Rapidly infuse sterile saline through catheter. 7. While patient is coughing, aspirate secretions and exudates through the catheter with a sterile syringe. 8. Follow standard hospital protocol for monitoring the patient for dyspnea before and after removing the catheter. WARNING!
