DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH EFFICIENT LAB DESIGN

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH EFFICIENT LAB DESIGN

Product catalog summary
Overview: The document discusses the design and operational benefits of enclosed laboratories, focusing on cost savings, safety, and energy efficiency. It highlights the importance of maintaining room balance, ventilation, and temperature control to ensure safety and efficiency in laboratory environments.
Features & Benefits:
  • Lower capital and installation costs due to reduced system pressure drop, allowing for smaller HVAC equipment.
  • Energy savings through Variable Air Volume (VAV) control, which reduces airflow and fan energy.
  • Enhanced safety with accurate flow measurements and closed-loop control of fume hood face velocity and room air flows.
Initial Cost Savings:
  • Enclosed labs feature normally closed doors and VAV systems to save energy.
  • Primary containment is provided by fume hoods, snorkels, and biosafety cabinets, while negative room pressure offers secondary containment.
  • General exhaust is required to maintain minimum ventilation and space temperature for comfort and experiment integrity.
General Sequence of Operation:
  • The room controller manages room balance, ventilation, and temperature.
  • Room pressure control is achieved by adjusting supply and exhaust volumes to maintain a constant flow offset.
  • Ventilation control ensures supply air volume meets minimum setpoints.
  • Temperature control involves adjusting air supply and reheat valves to maintain setpoint temperatures.
Fume Hood Controller Sequence of Operation:
  • The fume hood controller uses a sidewall sensor to measure face velocity, adjusting exhaust volume to maintain setpoints.
  • During unoccupied mode, face velocity is maintained at a setback setpoint.
Energy Savings and Safety:
  • Low-pressure drop dampers reduce fan energy, as recommended by the US EPA.
  • Flow measurements have a best-in-class accuracy of +/- 3%.
  • Offset room control adjusts based on actual pressure measurements to maintain containment.

DRIVING SAFETY THROUGH EFFICIENT LAB DESIGN-3

Enclosed Laboratory Driving Safety Through Efficient Lab Design Fume Hood Controller Sequence of Operation The fume hood controller continuously measures average fume hood face velocity using a sidewall sensor. If average face velocity rises above setpoint, the fume hood controller will reduce the exhaust volume until face velocity setpoint is achieved. If average face velocity drops below setpoint, the fume hood controller will increase exhaust volume until face velocity setpoint is achieved. During unoccupied mode, the fume hood controller will maintain face velocity at setback setpoint. Specifications...
