Vivaspin® 4 and Vivaspin® 6

Product catalog summary
Overview: Vivaspin® ultrafiltration concentrators are disposable devices designed for concentrating biological samples. They are available in two models: Vivaspin® 4 for up to 4 ml samples and Vivaspin® 6 for up to 6 ml samples. These devices feature a patented vertical membrane design that minimizes fouling and enhances concentration speed. They are intended for single use, with some models suitable for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) applications.
Applications: Vivaspin® devices are used for concentrating urine, spinal fluid, and bacterial antigens prior to diagnostic procedures such as electrophoresis and immunoassays.
Features and Benefits: The vertical membrane design ensures fast filtration rates, while integrated dead stop technology prevents over-concentration. The devices are made from low binding materials to ensure high sample recovery and are available in a wide range of molecular weight cutoffs to suit specific applications.
Technical Specifications:
  • Concentrator Capacity: Vivaspin® 4 and 6 can be used with both fixed angle and swinging bucket rotors.
  • Dimensions: Both models have a total length of 122 mm and a width of 17 mm.
  • Materials: The body and cap are made from polycarbonate or polypropylene, and the membrane is made from polyethersulfone (PES).
  • Equipment Required: A centrifuge with a rotor cavity for 15 ml conical bottom tubes is needed.
Membrane Selection Guide:
  • Polyethersulfone (PES): Suitable for most solutions with low fouling and good flow rates.
  • Cellulose Triacetate (CTA): Offers low non-specific binding, ideal for filtrate recovery.
  • Hydrosart® (HY): Low protein binding, suitable for protein concentration and desalting.
Performance Characteristics: The document provides detailed performance data for different molecular weight cutoffs and sample types, indicating time to concentrate and sample recovery percentages.
Ordering Information: The document lists various Vivaspin® models with different molecular weight cutoffs and pack sizes, along with their corresponding product codes.
Manufacturer and Contact Information: Manufactured by Sartorius Stedim Lab Ltd., with North American distribution details provided for ordering and inquiries.

Vivaspin® 4 and Vivaspin® 6Your Source for Clinical & Biological Concentrators Call us at 800-456-4633Concentration & Purification of Clinical Biological Samples Vivaspin® ultrafiltration concentrators are disposable devices for biological samples. Vivaspin® 4 is suitable for sample volumes up to 4 ml while Vivaspin® 6 can handle samples as much as 6 ml. The patented vertical membrane design and thin channel filtration chamber (US 5,647,990) minimizes membrane fouling and provides high speed concentrations. Vivaspin® devices are for single use and Vivaspin® 4 devices are intended for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) applications. Some Vivaspin® 6 products are also intended for IVD applications. Vivaspin® Applications — Concentration of urine prior to electrophoresis for diagnosis of multiple myeloma and amyloidosis. — Concentration of spinal fluid prior to electrophoresis for diagnosis of meningitis and multiple sclerosis. — Concentration of bacterial antigens in urine (Legionella, Pneumonia, Streptococcus B) prior to immunoassay Technical Specifications Concentrator Capacity Vivaspin® 4 Vivaspin® 6 Fixed angle rotor 4 ml 6 ml Swinging bucket rotor 4 ml 6 ml (membrane & support) Dead stop volume** 20 pl 30 pl **Dead stop volume may vary depending on sample, temperature and rotor Polycarb. Vivaspin® 4 and Vivaspin® 6-2

Membrane Selection Guide Polyethersulfone (PES) A good general purpose membrane for most solutions. Has low fouling characteristics with very good flow rates. Tolerates a broad pH range (from 1 to 9). Good hydrophilic properties with very low non-specific binding. Cast without a membrane support that could bind filtered solutes. Use when recovery of filtrate is most important (free drug or hormone testing). Similar to regenerated cellulose but with better performance characteristics and low protein binding. Good choice for concentration and desalting of proteins that may bind to other membranes...
