Product catalog summary
Overview
Vivaspin® ultrafiltration concentrators are disposable devices designed for concentrating biological samples. They are available in different models, such as Vivaspin® 500 for sample volumes of 100-500 μl and Vivaspin® 2 for up to 2 ml. The devices feature a patented vertical membrane design that minimizes fouling and enhances concentration speed.

Applications
  • Concentration of spinal fluid for diagnosing meningitis and multiple sclerosis.
  • Concentration of antigens in urine and serum for immunoassays.
  • Protein removal from serum and cell/tissue lysates.
  • Buffer exchange for proteomic peptide samples.
  • Sample preparation for mass spectrometry.

Features and Benefits
  • Vertical membrane design ensures fast filtration rates.
  • Integrated dead stop prevents over-concentration.
  • Low binding materials ensure high sample recovery.
  • Available in a wide range of molecular weight cutoffs for specific applications.
  • Large family of devices can process samples from 100 μl to 20 ml.

Technical Specifications
  • Vivaspin® 500: Capacity of 0.5 ml with fixed angle rotor.
  • Vivaspin® 2: Capacity of 2.0 ml with fixed angle rotor and 3.0 ml with swinging bucket rotor.
  • Materials: Polycarbonate body and cap, polypropylene filtrate vessel, and various membrane types (PES, CTA, HY).

Performance Characteristics
  • Concentration times and sample recovery rates vary based on molecular weight cutoff and membrane type.
  • Example: Aprotinin (6,500 MW) with 3,000 MWCO PES membrane achieves 96% recovery in 30 minutes at 12,000 g.

Ordering Information
  • Available in various molecular weight cutoffs ranging from 2,000 to 1,000,000 MWCO.
  • Pack sizes of 25 or 100 units are available for different membrane types.

Membrane Selection Guide Polyethersulfone (PES) A good general purpose membrane for most solutions. Has low fouling characteristics with very good flow rates. Tolerates a broad pH range (from 1 to 9). Good hydrophilic properties with very low non-specific binding. Cast without a membrane support that could bind filtered solutes. Use when recovery of filtrate is most important (free drug or hormone testing). Similar to regenerated cellulose but with better performance characteristics and low protein binding. Good choice for concentration and desalting of proteins that may bind to other membranes...
