STRAIGHT FIBULA PLATING SYSTEM SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Product catalog summary
Introduction
WishBone Medical's Straight Fibula Plating System is designed for pediatric and adult patients for small and long bone fracture fixation, as well as for bones prepared surgically for deformity correction or arthrodesis. The system includes complete procedure kits in single-use sterile packaging to prevent delays due to missing components.

System Overview
  • Kit Components: Includes 8-hole or 6-hole straight fibula plates, double-ended drill guide, drill bits (2.0mm or 2.8mm, 2.7mm or 3.5mm), small depth gauge, solid T15 screwdriver, and cortical screws.
  • Plate Features: Plates are available in 6-hole (75.5mm) and 8-hole (99.5mm) sizes, designed with a low-profile for pediatric patients. They have oblong holes for positioning and rounded tips to reduce soft tissue irritation.
  • Screws: The system uses 2.7mm and 3.5mm titanium cortical screws available in lengths of 12, 14, 16, 18, and 22mm. Locking screws are available separately.

Indications
The system is indicated for fracture fixation and osteotomy in pediatric and adult patients.

Surgical Technique
  • Exposure & Fracture Reduction: A lateral or posterolateral incision is made to expose the fibula fracture. Standard lag screw reduction technique is used, ensuring reduction is within 1mm for locked plating techniques.
  • Plate Placement & Fixation: The selected plate is positioned and provisionally fixed. The appropriate drill bit and guide are used to lag the plate to the fibula with a cortical screw. The depth gauge determines screw length, and screws are inserted and tightened using a screwdriver.
  • Closure: After removing screws and the plate, the wound is closed. Postoperative care is determined by the surgeon, with restricted loading for unstable repairs until callus formation is confirmed.

TABLE OF CONTENTS SURGICAL TECHNIQUE Preoperative planning is recommended to assess the fracture and determine the appropriate plate length. Warning: Be cautious of plate and/or screw placement in patients with open growth plates. Exposure and Fracture Reduction Position patient appropriately for selected small bone procedure. A straight lateral or posterolateral surgical incision is made to expose the fracture of the fibula (fig 1). If needed, reduce the fibula fracture using the standard lag screw reduction technique (fig. 2). Caution: When using locked plating techniques, reduction should,...

TABLE OF CONTENTS SURGICAL TECHNIQUE Plate Placement and Fixation Place the selected 6-Hole or 8-Hole Straight Fibula Plate in the desired position and provisionally fix to bone after stabilization and reduction (fig. 3). Using the appropriate drill bit and the appropriate end (2.0 or 2.8mm) of the double-ended drill guide, lag the plate to the fibula with a cortical screw (fig. 4). Caution: Double-ended drill guide metal tips contain sharp features to provide friction against bone surface. Caution: Plate bending should be minimal. Do not rebend plates.
