Here’s how it works. Well before the day of your surgery, your doctor will send you for a highly precise MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of your knee. Using this 3-D image and software developed exclusively for this purpose, your surgeon creates a detailed plan for your surgery—including customized instrumentation that shows exactly how your new knee should be positioned. What risks are involved? Rehab begins quickly! On the day after your surgery, you’ll get a visit from your physical therapist and begin learning how to use your new knee. You may be fitted with a “continuous passive motion” machine that will gently straighten and bend your knee. Other exercises that promote blood flow to your legs include ankle pumps and pedaling your feet. Getting up and around soon is important.
